Paying for care
The Ontario programs and tax credits families miss
Funded home care, the disability tax credit, the caregiver amount, and what each is actually worth.
The short version
- Ontario Health atHome funds personal support and nursing at home for people who qualify — apply the day discharge is mentioned.
- The Disability Tax Credit is worth roughly $1,500–$2,000 a year federally and can be backdated up to ten years.
- Attendant care fees can be claimed as a medical expense, with limits that interact with the DTC.
- Keep every invoice. The claim is only as good as the paperwork.
Ontario Health atHome
The provincial program funds personal support, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy at home. You can self-refer; you do not need a doctor to start it.
Allocations are typically one or two visits a day and are based on assessed need, not on what a family asks for. It rarely covers everything and it is always worth having.
The Disability Tax Credit
If your parent is markedly restricted in walking, dressing, feeding or mental functions, they likely qualify. A doctor completes form T2201.
It can be backdated up to ten years, which regularly produces a five-figure refund for families who applied late. It also unlocks the Registered Disability Savings Plan and interacts with the attendant care claim, so speak to an accountant before choosing between them.
Medical expenses and the caregiver amount
Attendant care and nursing home fees are claimable medical expenses. The full-fee claim and the DTC cannot always both be taken in the same year, and which combination wins depends on the numbers — this is the single most common place families leave money behind.
The Canada Caregiver Credit is available to the person supporting a dependant with a physical or mental impairment. It is claimed by the caregiver, not the parent.
Paperwork that makes the claim work
Invoices must show the provider, the dates, the hours and the service. A lump-sum 'care services' invoice is harder to defend.
Every invoice paid through Seniorcarez is itemised and downloadable as a year-end pack, which exists specifically for this.
